Spotlight On: Naome Racho, Scorpio’s First Female ETO
Meet Naome Racho, Scorpio’s very first Electro Technical Officer. Naome joined Scorpio in 2023 as an electrician, and has worked her way up to ETO, promoted at the beginning of April, onboard STI Maverick. It was her Chief Engineer, Feurel Esplana, who brought our attention to this milestone, sending us the above photos of Naome replacing the Radar Magnetron onboard, saying: “…there’s no boundary to being an ETO on board. The first Lady ETO in the Company.”
We’ve asked Naome to share with us a bit about herself, and she candidly responded about her fears, her challenges, and how at times she was filled with doubt. Here she it, in her own words:

Why did you choose a career in maritime?
As an athlete in the past, I’m the type of person who is constantly moving. As an engineer, I am a woman of curiosity and hungers for continuous learning. As a dreamer, I’ve always wanted to reach places. I figured a career in maritime would give my movement purpose, fulfill my desire to know more, all while moving around the world.
Why Scorpio?
I applied to Scorpio upon learning it is one of the biggest tanker companies there is. I knew being part of something big means better opportunities. I was lucky to be accepted, which led me to appreciate the company even more. I recognized the company’s excellent safety management, kind environmental stewardship, and delightful care for the crew’s welfare. Its high standards also came with great expectations, which made the job very challenging. Challenges that I couldn’t have overcome without the expert teachings of my superiors and the support of other crews. This journey would have been impossible without their encouragement.
Anything you are particularly proud of?
After months of applications, and then years of training; becoming officially part of one of the top companies in this industry was a prideful moment of my life. Everything I have worked hard for felt honored; it really does get better. However, little did I know, that was only the beginning.
When I was promoted for my current position [ETO], I was filled with doubt. I used to wake up every day with anxiety and fear of not being good enough. I had to push myself to keep moving, and ultimately, I had to be brave. If there is something I am proud of as a woman in a male-dominated field, it is that I am committed to reaching my goals, no matter how scary the waves that will take me to them.
