Investing in the Next Generation: Scorpio Tanker Welcomes Summer Interns

This summer, Scorpio Tankers welcomed a dynamic group of student interns from top universities, including Harvard, Georgetown, Loyola Marymount, and Lehigh, to give them not only a glimpse into the world of shipping, but also to offer a truly immersive experience in the global maritime industry, with practical projects and real-world exposure to the product tanker business.
Organized by our Quantitative Research Associate, Christian Rodriguez, the group of interns included Antonia Salame, Sofia Krause, Caroline DesChamps, and Dhwani Jain. From day one, the interns were engaged in meaningful assignments across multiple departments, contributing fresh ideas and demonstrating adaptability in tackling tasks that spanned the breadth of shipping operations. Alongside their project work, they were introduced to the company’s culture, which they described as warm, supportive, and built on “intelligence and kindness”, a defining element of their Scorpio experience.

One of the highlights of the program was their attendance at the Marine Money Conference in New York City, a cornerstone event in the shipping calendar. There, the interns gained invaluable insights into the product tanker market, shipping finance, and real-time industry analysis. They also had the opportunity to network with industry leaders and meet representatives from the Marshall Islands, opening their eyes to the importance of global relationships in maritime trade.
Another unforgettable experience came during a vessel visit to STI Modest in Providence, Rhode Island. Walking the decks of this impressive tanker left a lasting impression on the interns, who were struck not only by the scale and complexity of the ship but also by the people who run it. Observing crew life firsthand helped them connect the dots between office-based decisions and their impact on seafarers’ daily routines. For many, it deepened their appreciation for the people who keep global trade moving. The group also gained a tangible understanding of the industry’s responsibility to the planet, learning about the many safety protocols and operational measures in place to minimize environmental impact, reduce emissions, and protect the seas where our vessels operate.
The program also included a trip to the New York Stock Exchange, giving an up-close look at finance, and global markets from the trading floor. An experience that complemented the interns’ project work, giving them a holistic perspective of the shipping ecosystem and preparing them for future careers in the industry.
As the program came to a close in August, the group expressed their appreciation for the experience. They described it as “inspiring” and emphasized how much they had learned, with lessons they will carry forward into their future careers.
We wish them all the best with their continued studies!

If you could describe your overall experience with Scorpio in 3 words, what would they be?
“Inspiring, motivating, welcoming.”
What was your most memorable moment during your internship?
“The most memorable experience of my Scorpio internship was attending the Marine Money Conference in New York City. It provided invaluable professional exposure, from networking opportunities to hearing insights from leading voices in shipping finance. The conference gave me a glimpse of what a future career in the industry could look like and showed me how the presentations we were working on at the time connected to real-world analysis, where investors seek insight into current performance and future projections of different sectors. I learned an incredible amount, met generous and welcoming people, and especially valued the opportunity to connect with representatives from the Marshall Islands. Overall, the experience tied my internship together and made the industry feel both accessible and inspiring.”
Did you have any knowledge about tanker shipping beforehand?
“Honestly no, not really. Before my internship, I didn’t have much prior knowledge about tanker shipping, but I quickly came to appreciate the industry’s complexity. It integrates environmental, political, and financial aspects in a way that highlights its significant relevance to global systems and to everyday life.”
What was your experience visiting the vessel?
“Visiting the STI Modest was an incredible experience, and I’m very grateful to Scorpio for giving me that opportunity. The crew was so welcoming and took the time to show us different parts of the vessel, from the engine and control room to even the basketball court on board. Having that hands-on experience made my climate change risk mitigation project much more tangible, as I could directly see the crew’s living conditions and understand how rising temperatures and sea levels could impact both the vessel and the people working on it. It was also rewarding to connect what we researched in the office with the realities of life at sea.”

Did you learn something that will stay with you for life?
“As I continue my professional career, I know I’ll always look back on my internship with Scorpio with a smile. It was such a rewarding experience that showed me how enjoyable work can be when you are surrounded by the right people and environment. One moment that will stay with me was on our last day, when the president, Robert Bugbee, shared a piece of advice: never believe you can change a workplace- if it isn’t the right fit, it’s best to move on. That perspective is something I will carry with me throughout my career. Scorpio’s welcoming culture, combined with the intelligence and kindness of everyone I met, made it an honor and a true pleasure to intern there.”
