IMEF: Leading the way to carbon footprint accountability

Scorpio Group is proud to share that our Group Head of Services and Procurement, Paolo Magonio, represented Scorpio in signing the new IMPA Maritime Environmental Footprint (IMEF) Initiative—an ambitious step toward creating a more responsible and sustainable global supply chain. By joining as one of the first founding members, Scorpio is helping set the course for positive change across the maritime industry.

The IMEF Initiative, launched by IMPA SAVE last October, provides a clear framework for measuring and reporting “Scope 3 emissions”, the emissions generated during the production of parts, materials, and equipment before they even leave the factory–also coined ‘cradle-to-gate’. This new guidance gives shipping companies and suppliers a common standard for calculating the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF). This measure lays the foundation for smarter, more sustainable procurement decisions in the years ahead. According to Paolo, this will lead to a shift in mindset, saying: “over time, emissions will become a selection parameter alongside cost, availability and quality. Buyers and suppliers will be working together to reduce emissions.”

For Scorpio, this partnership reflects much more than signing an agreement—it underscores our long-standing commitment to sustainability. We believe in taking action that goes beyond compliance, and in working with like-minded partners to build real, measurable progress for our oceans and for future generations.

Mr. Magonio has shared his pride in being among the first signatories of this milestone group charter, a pledge to sustainability in action. The IMEF initiative will help the entire maritime industry move toward greater accountability on the production practices from the smallest office supply to the largest mechanical part. Scorpio is excited to be part of this journey, and Paolo emphasizes: “Our contribution goes beyond just supporting. We have taken an active role role leading the IMEF digital sub working group with our expertise and vision to solve the emissions data riddle: if you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it.”

The IMEF Initiative was officially unveiled in October 2024, with Scorpio joining a select group of leading maritime companies as founding members. The momentum will continue at the upcoming IMPA conference in London, where the framework will take center stage in discussions on emissions reporting and the future of sustainable procurement.

At Scorpio Group, we see sustainability as more than a goal—it’s part of our responsibility as a leader in global shipping. By supporting initiatives like IMEF, we are proud to help chart a course toward a cleaner, greener maritime industry.
