Fresh Perspectives at Scorpio Tankers
What does it take to bridge academic theory with the fast-paced world of maritime finance? An internship at Scorpio Tankers!
Joining the company at the end of 2025, Chloe Ferrao and Antonia Lycouris brought distinct academic backgrounds and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. During their time at Scorpio, they not only broadened their understanding of the shipping industry but also honed specific skills, such as conducting market trend analyses, developing financial models, and presenting at industry conferences. Here, in their own words, Chloe and Antonia reflect on how these hands-on experiences connected theory to practice and shaped their perspectives on product tankers and maritime finance.
Chloe Ferrao
“Before starting this internship, I knew very little about shipping, so this experience has been a real discovery. Over the past few months, I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from tanker earnings analysis to trade flows and deployment dynamics. The work was varied and intellectually stimulating.
What stood out to me was the team. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. People were always happy to discuss ideas or provide guidance, which made the learning curve both steep and enjoyable.
I was also lucky to attend several industry conferences, where I had the opportunity to meet many people from across the shipping industry and better understand how the market works in practice. These experiences helped connect the analytical work to the broader industry context.
Shipping – and product tankers in particular – turned out to be far more interesting than I expected, sitting at the intersection of global trade, energy markets, regulation, and geopolitics. This constant evolution is what makes the space so compelling.
Overall, this internship has been a very enriching experience and has sparked a genuine interest in shipping. I’m grateful for the opportunity and for the people who made it such a positive experience.”
Antonia Lycouris
“My internship at Scorpio was a hands-on introduction to maritime finance that allowed me to build on my shipping operations background and my recent master’s degree in Shipping, Trade, and Finance at Bayes Business School.
Through analytical projects, industry conferences, and involvement in earnings preparation, I gained insight into how financial analysis, market dynamics and strategic decision-making come together to drive company decisions related to fleet deployment, capital allocation and market positioning.
My work included internal rate of return analyses for MR and LR2 vessels, trade lane analysis and crude-on-water tracking. I observed the preparation of earnings materials and presentations, which provided insight into how company performance is evaluated internally and communicated externally. Subsequent to earnings, attending industry conferences and market briefings helped me better understand how investors, market participants and broader economic and geopolitical factors play into shipping dynamics.
Throughout the internship, I had the opportunity to interact with my colleagues at Scorpio, and very much appreciated their willingness to explain concepts, answer questions and share perspectives which made a strong impression on me and has contributed significantly to my learning experiences.
Overall, during my time at Scorpio I have strengthened my technical skills and broadened my understanding of strategic finance and investor relations. This has been quite a valuable and accretive experience considering my previous work involved in large part ship operations and back-office support.
My sincere thanks and appreciation to James Doyle, Christian Rodriguez and Baichuan Yang for their mentorship and for providing me with this opportunity, and to Chloe Ferraro for being such a pleasure to work alongside throughout the internship.”
