Chronicling a Life at Sea: A Chief Engineer’s 20-Year Journey with Scorpio
2025 marks a significant milestone for Chief Engineer Alen Pancic, who celebrates 20 years with Scorpio. Originally from Split, Croatia, Alen began his journey with the company in August 2005, aboard the OBO tanker 3 Maj as a First Assistant Engineer. Since then, he has become a cornerstone of Scorpio’s engineering team, known not only for his technical expertise but also for his deep appreciation of life at sea.
Over the past two decades, Alen has taken a group photo of every engineering crew he’s worked with, creating a visual chronicle of camaraderie, teamwork, and shared experiences. His collection is a testament to the bonds formed in the unique environment of maritime life. Perhaps you may find yourself amongst these photos.
When asked what he enjoys most about his work, Alen reflects on the serenity of the open sea: “Being on open sea is a unique kind of peace. No roads, no borders. The endless horizon reminds you of how big the world is. There’s a deep, almost sacred quiet at sea. It’s just you, the open sea, wind, and the rhythm of the ship. Only those who sail or have a boat at home can truly understand this.”
Among his most memorable moments is crossing the Equator for the first time, a rite of passage marked by a traditional maritime ceremony. But beyond the rituals and routines, Alen emphasizes the human connections forged through the challenges of the job: “This is a hard and sometimes very difficult job where you can bond with people in ways that aren’t possible in normal jobs at home. And most importantly, you find some real and true friends.”
Alen’s dedication, spirit, and love for the sea continue to inspire those around him. His 20-year anniversary is not just a celebration of time served, but of a life lived with purpose, passion, and a profound respect for the ocean. Hat’s off to you, Sir, and your tireless dedication to Scorpio!
